The Song of Moses

15 Then Moses and the people of Israel (A)sang this song to the Lord, saying,

(B)“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
    the horse and his rider[a] he has thrown into the sea.
(C)The Lord is my strength and my (D)song,
    and he has become (E)my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
    (F)my father's God, and (G)I will exalt him.
The Lord is (H)a man of war;
    (I)the Lord is his name.

(J)“Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea,
    and his chosen (K)officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
The (L)floods covered them;
    they (M)went down into the depths like a stone.
(N)Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power,
    your right hand, O Lord, (O)shatters the enemy.
In the (P)greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries;
    you send out your fury; it (Q)consumes them like stubble.
At the (R)blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;
    the (S)floods stood up in a heap;
    the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
The enemy said, (T)‘I will pursue, I will overtake,
    I (U)will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them.
    I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’
10 You (V)blew with your wind; the (W)sea covered them;
    they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

11 (X)“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
    Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
    awesome in (Y)glorious deeds, (Z)doing wonders?
12 You stretched out (AA)your right hand;
    the earth swallowed them.

13 “You have (AB)led in your steadfast love the people whom (AC)you have redeemed;
    you have (AD)guided them by your strength to your holy abode.
14 (AE)The peoples have heard; they tremble;
    pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Now are the chiefs of Edom (AF)dismayed;
    trembling seizes the leaders of (AG)Moab;
    (AH)all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
16 Terror and (AI)dread fall upon them;
    because of the greatness of your arm, they are still (AJ)as a stone,
till your people, O Lord, pass by,
    till the people pass by whom (AK)you have purchased.
17 You will bring them in and (AL)plant them on your own mountain,
    the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode,
    (AM)the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.
18 (AN)The Lord will reign forever and ever.”

19 For when (AO)the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, (AP)the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. 20 Then (AQ)Miriam (AR)the prophetess, the (AS)sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and (AT)all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them:

(AU)“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Bitter Water Made Sweet

22 Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of (AV)Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to (AW)Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.[b] 24 And the people (AX)grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 And he (AY)cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,[c] and he (AZ)threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord[d] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he (BA)tested them, 26 saying, (BB)“If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the (BC)diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, (BD)your healer.”

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)whoever hears my word and (B)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (C)does not come into judgment, but (D)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (E)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (F)the dead will hear (G)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (H)will live. 26 (I)For as the Father has life in himself, (J)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (K)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (L)an hour is coming when (M)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (N)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

30 (O)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and (P)my judgment is just, because (Q)I seek not my own will (R)but the will of him who sent me. 31 (S)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is (T)another who bears witness about me, and (U)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 (V)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that (W)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and (X)shining lamp, and (Y)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But (Z)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For (AA)the works that the Father has given me (AB)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, (AC)bear witness about me that (AD)the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me (AE)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, (AF)his form you have never seen, 38 and (AG)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 (AH)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and (AI)it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet (AJ)you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 (AK)I do not receive glory from people. 42 But (AL)I know that you do not have (AM)the love of God within you. 43 I have come (AN)in my Father's name, and (AO)you do not receive me. (AP)If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and (AQ)do not seek the glory that comes from (AR)the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, (AS)on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for (AT)he wrote of me. 47 But (AU)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

27 Then (A)they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water.

Bread from Heaven

16 They (B)set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the people of Israel (C)grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, (D)“Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, (E)when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain (F)bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may (G)test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, (H)it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, (I)“At evening (J)you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the (K)glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For (L)what are we, that you grumble against us?” And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—(M)what are we? Your grumbling is not (N)against us but against the Lord.”

Then Moses (O)said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, (P)‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the (Q)glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord said to Moses, 12 “I (R)have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At (S)twilight you shall eat meat, and (T)in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

13 In the evening (U)quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning (V)dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, (W)“What is it?”[a] For they (X)did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, (Y)“It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an (Z)omer,[b] according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” 17 And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. 18 But when they measured it with an omer, (AA)whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. 19 And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and (AB)it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22 On (AC)the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 he said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of (AD)solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.’” 24 So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and (AE)it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for (AF)today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.”

27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. 28 And the Lord said to Moses, (AG)“How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people (AH)rested on the seventh day.

31 Now the house of Israel called its name (AI)manna. It was (AJ)like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a (AK)jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept throughout your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before (AL)the testimony to be kept. 35 The people of Israel (AM)ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till (AN)they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

The New Life

17 Now this I say and (A)testify in the Lord, (B)that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, (C)in the futility of their minds. 18 They (D)are darkened in their understanding, (E)alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to (F)their hardness of heart. 19 They (G)have become callous and (H)have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you (I)learned Christ!— 21 assuming that (J)you have heard about him and (K)were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to (L)put off (M)your old self,[a] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through (N)deceitful desires, 23 and (O)to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on (P)the new self, (Q)created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you (R)speak the truth with his neighbor, for (S)we are members one of another. 26 (T)Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and (U)give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather (V)let him labor, (W)doing honest work with his own hands, so (X)that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 (Y)Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give (Z)grace to those who hear. 30 And (AA)do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, (AB)by whom you were sealed for the day of (AC)redemption.
